- The best thing to do with this kind of radio is to use it as a cross-band
- repeat hand-held thru another kenwood base or mobile doing the cross-
- band-repeating, such as a 732, 741, 742 etc. Then you can run the
- milliwatt power level, run it all day, never worry about running out, and
- always have a plenty good signal. Write me for more comments if you please.

- Subject: Best code-speed improvement tapes?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Hi! Name is Ed. QTH Univ of IL, Chicago. My advice: don't use tapes, or
- at least, don't use ONLY tapes. For me, I tended to remember the message
- on the tape, so they were really only good ONE TIME THROUGH! After 2 or
- 3 times thru the tape, I knew what was coming. I only had to 'decode'
- the first letter or two and I knew the rest of the message. Although this
- is good to instill confidence, and also helps reinforce, since you can
- be writing and 'verifying-copying' as you're listening, you really don't
- get the same effect that you will when you take the test (or when you
- have a QSO on CW, for that matter). What WOULD I recommend? I hope you
- have a PC. Get MorseTutor or SuperMorse. Ask around, one of them is
- usually available either from another ham or a bulletin board system
- (BBS) in your area. Probably could get it from an ftp site on internet.
- If you don't own a PC and don't need one for anything else (hard for
- me to picture that, but I suppose it's possible), try to get access
- to one (borrow, rent, go to local school/unioversity/library or
- something). SECOND SUGGESTION: Code practice broadcasts from W1AW. The
- schedule is printed in QST each month (available at most magazine
- stands) and many other sources. Ask another ham. I don't have the
- sked in front of me or I'd list it here... but this is great
- practice, if you have a receiver, because the messages include sentences
- and random letters/numbers such as long lists of contest scores.
- It starts out at 5, goes to 7.5, and then 10, 13 and 15 words per minute
- (something like that). It kinda encourages you to push your speed if
- you want to keep listening. It's on like twice a day, check the sked.
- I know whatcha mean about the Advanced, I stopped there fro a few years
- myself... was always frightened of the 20 wpm. OH, ONE MORE HINT:
- If you were to put in one hour a week, it might take 250 hours to get up
- to speed (five years time). If you practiced 5 hours a day, it might take
- you a total of 65 hours , or less than three weeks. Of course you can't
- practice 5 hours a day (who knows, maybe you could, I couldn't), but the
- point is, the more hours you put in per day, not only the less elapsed
- time is it going to take, the less TOTAL time it's going to take, because
- each time you start up, you don't have to spend so much time getting back
- up to the speed you left off at (it tends to leak out of your brain as
- you are resting between sessions, slowing your speed down). So GO AT IT
- AS HARD AS YOU CAN, time-wise, often-wise, and effort-wise. Practicing
- with headphones is also a tremendous boost.
-
- 73 and good luck!

- Subject: Cruise ship radio operation
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- In a previous article, meh@cbsms1.cb.att.com (Martin E Hartwell x2091) says:
-
- > I just returned from a cruise to the Caribbean, if you could only see my
- smile. Anyway other than having a real good time I did stop at the radio
- room of the ship and talked to the operator. I was standing in the
- reception room outside the actual room that contained the equipment. The operator gave me
- >a complete tour of his world, low band, vhf, satellite, fax, eg. Really a
- >small room. On this ship there were two low band, around 8 MHZ inverted
- >vee antannas. He said one was primary and the other secondary, or spare.
-
- >The operator I talked to kind of implied that a lot of the ship to shore
- was handled by satellite now but some went by way of low band. In fact he
- was talking to the AT&T operator in New York as I came up to the window.
- >
- This might not be new info for some readers of this newsgroup but for
- those who are interested, you CAN copy this ship-to-shore phone patch
- traffic on the HF bands . . . not only from holiday cruise ships up to and
- including the QEII and Carnival Lines but all kinds of other vessels at sea.
-
- AT&T does indeed operate mega-coastal stations with high power (10kw+) and
- awesome antenna farms (so they are easily heard). They are KMI in Point
- Reyes, CA, WOM in Fort Lauderdale, and WOO in Manahawkin, NJ.
-
- They are duplex operations (split xmit and rx freqs.) but most
- decent receivers or transceivers with general coverage receive
- will let you set two VFO frequencies. You just have to flip back and
- forth between the two frequencies to hear both sides of the conversation. They
- operate on a variety of specified marine channels in the HF bands in the
- ranges of:
-
- * NOTE: MINUS OFFSET VARIES BY BAND IN USE
- 4355 - 4430 KHz (ships transmit approx. 294.6 KHz lower than shore stn.)
- 8722 - 8811 KHz ( ..................... 523.9 KHZ .....................)
- 13100 - 13190 KHz ( ....................770.8 KHz .....................)
- 17230 - 17330 KHz ( ....................772.9 KHz .....................)
- 22620 - 22705 KHz ( ....................596.0 KHz .....................)
-
- There is lots of interesting phone traffic here, from vacationers calling
- the family back home to ship crews messaging home base etc. Depending on
- propagation and your QTH, some bands might be more favourable than others
- but the 8 MHz band is a good place to start listening, especially if you
- know 40 metres is in good shape.
-
- Sure, it might be a little voyeuristic, but as long as the airwaves are
- public domain and until they start scrambling the stuff up to birds,
- listen away and have fun!
-
- Cheers and 73...Rob

- Subject: digital speech transmission for HAMs?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- There are a few issues with digital voice for hams.
-
- 16Kbits/sec sounds pretty good with current technology. New
- digital systems are getting acceptable sound over 8Kbits/sec. For those
- of you who aren't familiar with them, the military has STU-III phones
- that give voice capability at 2.4kbits/sec. Now the voice is only as
- good as it will map to the model of the human vocal system in the phone.
-
- A question that would have to be addressed would be coding.
- Would it be a data stream that is transmitted when you push the button,
- or would it be packets in a TDMA scheme? There are also legal issues
- with some things like CDMA.
-
- The other question is bandwidth. Now for US hams the FCC has
- set a specific deviation for all digital codes. If we where to have a
- minimum singal to noise ratio set, a maximum signaling rate could be
- determined and modems designed. Another possibility is to use NBFM and
- run an audio modulation into an HT or mobile rig. This way current RF
- equipment will remain the same and all that will be needed is a digital
- front end. Again repeat calculations and determine the level of service
- to quality of sound trade-offs.
-
- Good luck and 73,

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Thanks for reading this... I have a remote base setup in Chicago that is
- almost unuseable due to intermod (or something...???) on the 440 band.
- It seems the paging companies just splatter megawatts all over the place
- indiscriminately, but that is another discussion (altho I'd be happy
- to entertain your thoughts on THAT matter too...).
- WHAT CAN I DO about the 440 splatter? I have a dual band (high gain /
- high altitude) antenna feeding a diplexer which splits 2M and 440 into
- seperate cables into the Kenwood 732. I could put a band-pass filter
- on the 440 side only.
- Do you know where I can buy such a filter, or plans for one, or
- or have any other suggestions? I'd rather buy than build, yes, I'm
- an "appliance operator", rather just plug n play. But will build
- if I have no recourse. Thanks for your reply! Please E-mail it to me. 73!

- Hi all,
-
- I am interested in using servo motors of the type used in model

- Date: Sun May 01: 22:46:21 MST.
- From: Frederick Franz (WA6VHB)
- Lines: 34
- Distribution: USA
-
- I have for sale or trade two VHF mobile transceivers.
-
- (#1) Icom-230, PLL, synthesized, 67 channels, 146 to 148 Mhz. This
- unit covers the bandwidth in 30 khz increments. This is the
- original band plan for 2 meter repeaters. E.g., 146.76; 146.79;
- 146.94, etc. The repeater offsets are -600 and +600khz. The
- radio also operates on any of the simplex frequencies, e.g.146.52;
- 146.55; 146.58 etc. The power output is 10 W. This unit features
- an analog type S meter. The radio does not have DTMF or PL
- (CTCSS), however there is a an accessory connector for 9V. power
- take-off and audio input. (I have used this for external DTMF and
- it works fine). The unit also has a jack for external speaker.
- Price is $100.00 OBO. (See swap info below).
-
- (#2) Icom-280, PLL, synthesized, 559 channels. 143.9-145.995 Mhz in
- 5 khz steps. 146.01-148.11 Mhz in 15 khz steps. This is a later
- version than the Icom-230 for an expanded 2 meter band plan.
- The repeater offsets are -600 and +600 and the radio operates
- simplex on any of the channels. This radio has a dual power
- output selection of 10 watts or 1 watt. The frequency display
- is a 4 digit bright red LED type. This radio also has an analog
- type S meter, and a jack for an external speaker. Also featured
- is a 3 channel programmable memory. No DTMF or CTCSS.
- Price is $160.00 OBO. (See swap info below).
-
- Both of the above mobile units come in factory boxes with manuals and
- accessories: mounting bracket; power cord; extra fuse; and hdwe.
- These radios are in good condition and I'll even pay the shipping!
-
- I'll trade both of the above radios for a used dual band VHF/UHF
- radio such as the Alinco DR570T, DR592T or DR600T. (DR570T or
- DR600T preferable). Or if anyone has dual bander and doesn't want
- to trade, I'll offer cash. (The amount depending on condition, and
- if manual and accessories are furnished).

- I'd just like to mention that .52 should be used as a "calling" frequency
- and that once communication is established, the parties should move off
- to one of the other (VERY MANY) other simplex frequencies. This is of
- more concern in major metropolitan areas than it is in rural areas where
- there is very little activity. Especially on simplex, you may no be
- hearing one (or both sides) of a communication.

- I sent the original post for Ten-Tec's voice/fax numbers. Sent
- two FAXes so far. Still no catalog. Bummer.
-
- Guess I'll have to *call* them. Sigh. FAX is so much easier.
